Bonsai Garden Set III PerformanceA Bonsai Garden Set III, for flute and guitar, is dedicated to the two UDLAP students who premiered the work, Cecilia Villeda and Elena Tovar (pictured here.) It is part of what has become a whole collection of small pieces—an opportunity to explore the delicate musical form of miniatures. The original group of six Bonsai Garden sets were written between 2009 and 2010, with each set of movements dedicated to a different instrumental combination.

Set III presents a rhetoric of opposites. The most obvious contrasts appear in the texture and instrumentation: the third movement develops a canon where the flute seems to chase the guitar, while the fourth presents a straightforward pointillistic texture, followed by a gentle three voice canon and a march in the fifth and sixth movements. The set closes with extended flute techniques: blowing air into the mouthpiece, key clicks and lip glissandi.
