Vivaldi and maracas. I’ve been exploring miniatures for various instrumental combinations for a while now because I’m interested in taking the idea back to the Baroque origins of the concerto.

One of Mexico’s most treasured artists, guitarist Roberto Limón has taken interest in my work and commissioned a new piece. I finished Bonsai Concerto No. 3 late this Spring and premiered in two concerts: November 5, 2015, in Tijuana and November 7, 2015, in Ensenada.

I’ve taken inspiration from Vivaldi’s Baroque concerto form, but have added Latin dance rhythms and instruments (maracas, marimba), 19th c shape-note tunes, and some complex time signatures. This mix allowed me to force the soloist to adapt to various musical styles, giving Roberto plenty of room to be the virtuoso he is.
